Let´s sort out the basics. Lent always starts on a Wednesday, but which Wednesday is variable, due to the start of Spring and the first full moon thereafter. Got it? Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, which this year is 14 Feb 2018.
Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Day, is the day before Lent. Believers were expected to give up indulgences for Lent, and Shrove is a variant of confession, where one confessed one’s sins before the religious observance started. So indulgent things like eggs and butter were used up before the month of Lent started. Eggs plus butter means pancakes.
It appears Portugal used to hold Carnaval on Shrove Tuesday. Now it appears that Portugal celebrates Carnaval on the Sunday before Lent. That means all the kids can join in.
Bear in mind that while Portugal is going through a cold snap, it is several degrees warmer than the UK. Compare and contrast the clothes the revellers are wearing with those of the crowd and you get the idea.
A complete set of these photos, 37 from the north to the south of Portugal is at http://www.cmjornal.pt/sociedade/detalhe/tarde-de-fantasia-anima-milhares?ref=HP_Grupo1
President Trump appeared to be a popular caricature.
Other photos look decidedly Brazilian. Whilst others relate to Portugal such as Ronaldo and Sporting Clube de Portugal (in green and white hoops).
If you check out the link, you will see there is always a way in Portugal for the kids to participate in Carnaval.
