Madeleine – 10th – #10 – Rothley

Where were Kate and Gerry McCann when the Anglican community of Luz was remembering the 10th anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann?

They were at the Anglican church of St Mary and St John in Rothley in Leicestershire.

Perhaps there is no Catholic church in Rothley. It just so happens that in Luz and Rothley, the services were both Anglican, not Catholic.

These are people who flew to Italy to meet the Pope. Anglican in Luz, Anglican in Rothley.

  1. Do you know, SIL, whether it’s current practice in the UK to use the same church for catholic mass and anglican service ?

  2. I don’t know the precise details, sorry.

The place we lived in when in England, 1992 or 1993, had a mix. There were some churches that were Anglican-only, some that were Catholic-only. The ‘main’ church was multi-denominational. It was Anglican, Catholic and Jewish.

There was also a separate Muslim mosque and a Buddhist shrine.

I have next to no idea about churches in Rothley.

  3. Thank you for answering. I didn’t think of Rothley in particular, though likely Christians tend to share the same church in small places. Mixing Catholic and Anglican seems logical since these confessions are rather close to another. I wonder about the Methodists. Now I’m very surprised that your main church was also Jewish. Judaism is so far from Roman Catholicism !

  4. Yes, Methodists don’t need a consecrated place to celebrate. Like the Huguenots in France who hold their meetings “in the desert”.
