This article appeared in the paper version of the Algarve Resident published on 10 Oct 2014, though the remarks were made around 2 Oct 2014.
“… former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio has criticised the plan for a paedophile register accessible to parents of all children under the age of 16.”
My interpretation of this is that by Oct 2014 no such register existed, rather than it existed but a mechanism for parental access did not. I will need to do a bit more digging to verify this.
The article draws comparison with systems in other countries in Western Europe, gives a tiny sliver of information re repeat offenders, and gives Sampaio’s opinion of breaches of judicial secrecy in the press, so it is worth a read.
This has made me wonder what capability the police had of tracking or monitoring convicted paedophiles in 2007.
